Things I Should Do This Month: My August Goals

Sometimes I have a hard time coming up with monthly goals. I always feel like I want to challenge myself, but I also don't want to push myself to the limit ... I still want to have time to relax and enjoy myself!

Although I kind of want to try the healthier eating thing again this month, I feel like I really can't commit to it right now. As I mentioned yesterday, Eric and I have our annual health screen in a few weeks, so it would be great if I could stick to a healthier diet. However, since my birthday is rapidly approaching and I know we'll be going out to eat (and because I can also use my birthday as an excuse to treat myself to something delicious like ice cream or a fancy coffee drink), I'm just going to attempt to avoid overindulging on a regular basis. I'm pretty sure I have enough self control for that. (Maybe.)

I'm not the kind of person who gets overly excited about their birthday, but I do like any excuse to have fun and eat great food. So, with that in mind, I've decided to make this month's goals all about doing things I love while still taking care of myself. (I'm not 21 anymore, you know!)

My August 2015 Goals:

1.  Read at least 7 books from start to finish. I did it last month, so I know it's possible! I also love that I'm knocking out so many books toward my 50 book goal for the year. If I wind up reading more than 50 (which would be amazing, especially considering I've never been able to read 50 in a year before!), I'll bump up my overall goal a bit next year. I'd also ideally like to finish the Literary Ladies Summer Reading Challenge this month, but since that's totally dependent on getting the rest of the books from the library, I don't want to make that an "official" goal. (I know I'm on the waiting list for a couple of them.) The challenge runs through September 21, though, so I still have some time to complete it if I don't get all of my books this month.

2.  Write at least 2 more thoughtful, more personal posts. I've been posting a lot of random shit lately, and that's fine ... But sometimes I think it's important to push myself to write about personal experiences or thoughts on more serious topics or share things that make me a little uncomfortable. It's good to step out of my comfort zone once in a while, and unfortunately I don't feel like I've been doing that much lately.

3.  Try at least 2 new restaurants with Eric. I know we'll probably go somewhere new for my birthday dinner since that's become our new tradition, but I'm hoping we can also hit up another new place at some point during the month. I really want us to try at least 12 new places together this year (which obviously averages out to 1 each month), and if we can go to 2 during the month of August, we'll only be a month behind.

4.  Create a cocktail recipe and share it on my blog. This is something I've been wanting to do for a while, but I'm lazy and haven't bothered to even start thinking about what might taste great together. I don't think I'm going to invent some amazing new drink, but simple drinks (or even a new spin on a classic) can sometimes be awesome.

5.  Do at least 1 Jillian Michaels workout video each week. I tried one last week and another this last Tuesday, and they both completely kicked my ass. A couple of my friends have been using her videos (they're available for free on YouTube if you're interested), and they kept telling me that they felt like these were some of the best workouts they'd ever done. I skipped through the first one I tried beforehand to make sure I didn't need any weights or other supplies and thought, "This looks challenging but not overly so ... I'm sure I can do it without any problems." Here I have to stop and say LOL. No. I was sweating profusely and swearing at the screen throughout much of the workout, and by the end I was ready to pass out. But even though it was really fucking hard, I felt like I got a really great workout and I felt it for a few days. If I really want to lose weight and tone up (and I do), this is a great option for a cardio/full body workout. I like walking/jogging outside (if it's not too hot and humid) or on a treadmill, but sometimes I get bored with that. There are a bunch of Jillian Michaels videos online, so it will make it easy for me to switch it up and try new things. And I know that no matter which video I choose, I'll be getting an awesome workout!

I'm actually really excited about my goals this month, so hopefully that means I'll be sticking to them!
